1. Reviewed character- what they do, what they say, and how they say it-voice, intonation level of language (slang, informal, formal)
2. Character trait worksheet- do 5 of your choice, not all 10
3. Lesson on how to properly use quotation marks, including punctuation and capitalization in direct quotations, split quotations and quotations within quotations.
4. Quotation marks worksheet.
5. Write a phone conversation between two very different people. What they say and how they say it must reveal their character traits. Try to think of words other than "said" to reveal their personality and mood/tone. For example: "W-W-Why?" she stammered.
This is not an entire story, so there is no narrator, just dialogue in a phone conversation. The conversation must be at least 20 lines long- so each person must talk 10 times. You must use proper dialogue punctuation. Also, remember that each time the speaker changes, you must indent on a new line. Example:
Here are some ideas;
Old Nick phoning up Jack a month after their escape.
Old Nick phoning Ma a month after their escape.
Ma phoning an old friend a month after their escape.
A teen calling a parent to persuade them to let him/her sleep over, or go on a road trip.
A toddler calling his/her grandparent.
An intoxicated man stopped by a police officer. (Not a phone call, but still a good conversation.
This will be a fairly major assignment, worth many marks, so do your best. You will be marked on:
punctuation
different character traits
originality/word choice
length ad legibility
Phone conversation between my son away at university and me:
Jace said cheerfully, "Hey!"
"Hi Jace! What are you doing?" I asked, as usual.
"I'm good," he replied shortly.
I pressed on, knowing I caught him at a bad time, "How are classes going?"
He tried to sound enthusiastic, "They're all good, pretty easy."
"Well," I continued, "tell me about your favourite one."
"Mom," he said, while trying to shush the background noise in his apartment, "can I call you back later? My friends are here right now."
etc.
By the end of today you need to be done:
Character Trait worksheet- 5 only
Quotation Marks worksheet
Phone conversation- 20 lines with proper punctuation

Lit Power- "In a Flash, Her Life Changed"
This is a news article about a girl named Bethany who had her arm bit off by a shark while surfing. You may have seen the movie this summer called "Soul Surfer". Since it is a news article, part of the assignment asks you to analyze a different news article. You can use one from a news paper or online.
We are still focusing on CHARACTER traits, determined by your actions, what you say and how you say it. Think about Bethany's character traits as you read the news article. Then think about your own character traits. If someone had to describe you, what would they say, based on your actions and verbal communication?
By the end of today you need to be done:
In a Flash, Her Life Changed - See Lit Power wikipage for complete instructions.
Reading the entire book "ROOM" to the end.
